Just the tip…
Of the iceberg! What were you thinking?
*cackles*
I haven’t talked about an album of Kard’s before. In fact this is my first time checking out all their songs on an album. I’ve mostly been a causal fan.
However, I was vibing with Icky and I have Spotify so I slapped the album on immediately as I worked and yes, it’s a vibe.
Icky
This song is it! It has had me in a choke hold since it came out. I’ve always loved the Latin vibe of Kard songs and how they just know how to make songs that will get you either twerking or wining.
They really delivered with Icky.
I didn’t listen to the teasers and I only saw the title so I wasn’t sure what the song was about to be about but wow, somehow I did not expect this sexy number!
I love grown and sexy groups.
I like how the song starts with us going into the gutter and finding Kard in the underground world, why? Because our minds will be in the gutter for the whole song! This time rightfully so.
I did hear the set was designed based on The Backrooms, some internet thing I have no knowledge on. I did look it up… still did not 100% get it but I did get it 60%. I recommend you Google it too if want an explanation because I do not understand it enough to do it.
We start with Jiwoo in the slime. She is the main character in the mv, or rather she has already been icky-fied. She’s then luring the other members and making sure they become like her. We see BM turn in the end so I think I’m on the money.
I really like the camera work in the mv. Random, but honestly I do. The way it follows their movement, Somin’s snapped fingers, then her leg on J.Seph’s knee. It all flows real well.
The song is about sex, but getting dirty with it. Or rather, getting icky with it. BM’s verse is the one talked about the most but honestly, the whole song is sexy when you look at the lyrics. Jiwoo starts off strong with it from verse one.
However, is it the worst song on the album? No, that goes to Cake.
I love the Icky and Ay x4 that Somin does right after BM’s verse. It is so sexy!
They have been feeling themselves this comeback and I love to see it. The stages have been fun and the Tik Toks. It’s a good era. I also love that they’re gaining more recognition.
Without You
I love the melody of this song, it goes off. It has a Caribbean flavour in the verses, then gets more clubby in the chorus. It is a club song that for sure would get me dancing. The fire beat and the lyrics combined give it the vibe of ‘crying in the club’.
Or, it gives the vibe of that moment in a movie when the protag is dancing in the club and losing themselves to their emotions.
Someone give me a rom com, I’m ready to direct.
Anyway, I like this song. I love the way Jiwoo starts it, hello vocals. It’s a song that is good from beginning to end. BM’s verse as well, loved it.
The lyrics are about how they can’t live without their romantic partner. They be like, stay with me fam. Me being me, I’m like, “Stand up… stand up!” Because it does sound like their partner has their foot out the door.
The bridge I didn’t vibe with as much, I felt it slowed the song down. I felt like BM’s verse was enough in terms of a bridge. However, that didn’t take away from me liking the song.
Fxxk You (Jiwoo and Somin)
I thought I loved the beat of Without You the most but then Fxxk You came along and was like, “Girl please.”
I love this song!
Ooh the way they sing it! Their voices work so well together and it is just *chefs kiss*.
Not gonna lie, at first I thought this song was about them elegantly telling someone to fuck off. However, after looking at the lyrics and paying more attention than I did on my first listen… they’re not.
In fact, it’s more like they’re saying fuck me. The song starts off with, I’m lonely and I need you right now. Do not waste time, let our bodies become one.
Then, it’s like yeah, ‘fxxk you, fxxk you, never met somebody quite like you, I like you’
So, it’s about being lonely physically and then finding the perfect person to fulfil that need but being like, hurry the fuck up and fuck me.
It was still elegantly put.
Been That Boy (BM and J.Seph)
It’s such an interesting song, the first half is one way and the second half is another way. It’s like they did their thing and then were like, “Oh you thought we were finished. Nah!” And they came back with a final nail to the coffin.
It’s a good song, they’re hyping themselves up and also talking to the haters. I like how they do it though.
I really liked BM’s line:
I don’t really like to boast, but my haters do the most, so I turn it up to make them big mad.
Sometimes you just have to if they keep coming for you. I’m not a fan of diss songs or ‘I’m the best’ songs but he makes a good point. You have to hype yourself up.
J.Seph raps faster than you’d think, or rather than I thought. He sounds like he’s just causally flowing to the beat, just riding the rhythm but I had to pause and read each line of his rap. He’s really good at doing it in a way that seems easy but it’s not.
Cake
The beat is fire. As soon as BM says, ‘Turn it up right now!’ It’s on!
I am ehnjoying* this era of my fav groups getting into their grown and sexy mode. If Kard have been in this mode for a while, I’m sorry I am late to the party.
The song is exactly what you think it is about, if your mind is in the gutter. Yes, they want some cake. They want that cake to be eaten… or to eat the cake it depends on who is singing/rapping.
And the beat though, it’s so good. It has me either wanting to wine or twerk. Amma do both, I can do both. Both are welcome in this house. Although, I am better at one more than the other.
The way J Seph comes in though, yas! I can already picture this at a concert. His rap flow isn’t appreciated enough. I love the way he raps. I can’t describe it but it’s so J Seph. He starts and I’m like “Ey! It’s you!” It’s distinctive and chewy. Yes… chewy (compliment).
Without You (Alok Remix) (Radio Edit)
This remix really leans into the club vibes that were in the original song and amplifies it.
Icky (Inst.)
It does what it says on the tin.
So yeah, I liked this album. This has been fun! I’m glad Icky came along to release me from the choke hold that Don’t Recall had me in. I’ve liked other title tracks after Don’t Recall but Don’t Recall had me in her claws!
Now, I’m in Icky’s claws… improvement?
Plus, the album is good. I love the title track but also I’m feeling Fxxk You. I love listening to it and I like the story the lyrics take.
I also love Cake.
It’s nice that we have grown and sexy songs now. I like how candid Kard is and that they get to tell different kinds of love/lust stories. It makes for interesting listening.
So yes, I look forward to more and to the tour!
P.S.: Omd, I wrote this before the tour announcement (don’t ask why I’m posting this now… we’ve established I’m routinely slapped around by procrastination) and they’re coming to Europe!!! Woop woop!!
Also, is the album nine tracks? How come it’s shorter on Spotify?
