I just thought I’d share some thoughts on recent releases I’ve liked.
BM
I did not expect to love his album as much as I did. I follow him on Twitter (X) so I saw the lead up and all that and he talked about it being nostalgic in it having Y2k vibes and old school RnB vibes.
He was right! I was sceptical but he delivered!
He also talked about the songs being downright nasty and perfect for hot girl summer (ok, I’m adding the hot girl summer line but he did say it would be full of hoe anthems) and again he delivered!
I love that BM gets to express himself exactly how he wants to. Kpop and Kpop artists in general tend to get watered down and shoved into a box their company and their fans make for them. They get infantilised a lot and that’s a pet peeve of mine or they get seen as so one dimensional fans get shocked when an individual shows another side to themselves. I could go on a whole rant about that and how every human has range and most people, no matter how cute they are, are not just one thing but that’s a thesis for another day. For now amma just say, I love that BM got to express himself and that his fans embraced him doing that.
I like the title track Nectar but the hidden gem of the album has to be Loyalty! This song has the old school RnB vibes and I am living for it! Aaah! BM singing! Aaah! Man, I hope he does concerts in Europe. The lyrics though… wow homie!
BM is a ‘what you see what you get’ kind of person and although the lyrics are explicit they’re 100% things I would expect him to say or think.
So yeah, I am excited to see what other solo projects he’ll do.
Kiss of Life
I thought I was so unique liking Kiss of Life but no, they’re hot right now, everyone is loving them.
When they first popped up on my fyp people were like finally a group that debuted as adults and now we can get a guilt free sexy concept. And yeah, they are adults but they’re still mad young. I looked up their ages, because you always should, and they’re all born in the 2000s! I know 00 babies are hitting their twenties, some of them coming close to 25 but still I don’t know why but they’re so young to me. Maybe because in my friendship groups they were always the ones who were the youngest.
I blame society.
Anyhow, the oldest Julie was born in 2000 and Haneul, the youngest, was born in 2005. When I say I see them as real young it is mostly Belle and Haneul. Belle is barely 20 and Haneul is 19.
Age aside they have a great sound and again it’s very RnB. They caught my attention with Nobody Knows. Yes, the dance is sexy and I did attempt to do it but other than that the song bangs! I cannot tell you how many times I have listened to it on Spotify.
They have so much potential, I love their sound, and if they carry on like this they may become one of my favourite girl groups. I love RnB. It is my Achilles heel.
In general though, I am not paying attention to new kpop groups so I am surprised I fell into Kiss of Life’s music. But the comeback with Nobody Knows was really good and it looks like they’re building on that momentum well.
Oh, I also love how unapologetically girly they are.
I.M.
Last, I want to talk about I.M’s song Lure. I loved the music video. Oh the cinematography was so good!
I loved how he was expressing the memories of his past relationship over and over again, like it was Groundhog Day or something (ironically still haven’t gotten round to watching that movie yet). But the MV is not in chronological order so I found myself trying to figure out what went wrong between them and if it was always so turbulent.
It wasn’t. We get to see how it began and what the quiet moments were like.
Then as we think he is reminiscing by himself, sad by himself, she was in the car the whole time! Sis pulled up! She was like, oh hey you’re here too!
So they’re about to meet up, rekindle, make up?! The lyrics do suggest that, they’re lured in to each other, especially her.
I love an MV with a story.
I like the vibe of the song, I love that we get both singing I.M. and rapping I.M. too. I love the falsetto moments. Ooh, it may be my favourite I.M. solo song so far.
So yeah, those are my very quick kpop thoughts of the year so far. Soon Ateez will have a comeback and I will be obsessing over it, best believe. I fell even deeper into the Atiny hole I fear.
I am also turning 30, so prepare for introspective thoughts. I’ve also been travelling and I want to do a series of posts on that. I wanted to do one on Guernsey, Japan and New Zealand. If I write it here I’m holding myself accountable and I will feel bad and do it!
I need to motivate myself y’all or have people remind me otherwise I procrastinate so bad! Ah! Speaking of I also have Cdrama to catch up on! You see, the second half of this year amma be writing.
