This was their tenth anniversary, did you know that? I didn’t. If it wasn’t for the clock app and ReVeLuvs talking about it I would not have known. Why didn’t SM make a bigger deal about it?
SM seems to give up on groups at the oddest moments. Red Velvet are still pretty popular and they make good music. Is it so hard to promote your own group? Also, wouldn’t promoting them help you too? Because the more money they make the more money you make? I will never get companies.
I think part of the reason they’ve left Red Velvet is because they’re older and they’re ageist to their female groups. Yeah, I said it!
However, despite their efforts to undermine their own group, this comeback did not go unnoticed. Fans made an effort in promotion online so that it would gain attention. The girls themselves also really put in a lot of effort to the promotion. I don’t think I’ve seen them in so many shows in a while.
The song Cosmic is pretty good too. It’s very Red. Remember when their title tracks would be either Red, hype/bright, or Velvet, soft/ballad? Ah, the fun times.
The song is very summer and bright and cheerful… but that is only the cover. Underneath the smiles and the bright colours is a dark secret!
I do wonder where this theme came from. Most of Red Velvet’s music videos have a dark twist but like… when did this start? Who’s idea was it? Because Happiness was a Red song and the video was also sunshine and roses… Automatic was a Velvet song and also not dark. Now that I think about it, I actually don’t know when it started. Was it Russian Roulette?
Back to the music video, it’s so dark! It gives Midsommar. I did not watch that movie because I enjoy sleeping but I did watch Kennie JDs video on it and wow it sounded like a heavy film. The MV draws on the same themes, of a summer festival and of a murderous cult capturing people to sacrifice for their festival.
There are elements of the Midsommar festival and general summer festivals as they have a maypole and maypoles were used in England too. There’s one near my old house. It’s not used anymore so it kind of just sits there.
I find it interesting that because of the movie most people now associate Midsommar with a murderous cult when really it’s just a summer festival in Europe. I do wonder what people who do celebrate the festival think.
It makes me laugh the part where they’re sitting drinking tea and then someone runs past and Seulgi spots them and dashes after them with the most chilling looking on her face. I laughed because I was like “Really, you’re gonna be take down by tiny Seulgi?” Fight back! But then my laughter died when I realised they had rigged the forest. It’s hard to fight against good trap engineering.
Fred would be proud.
That’s probably what makes them so scary. They are small, and they appear non-threatening and most of the video they spend laughing but they’ve rigged the forest, know the land inside out and have a 100% success rate in capturing people.
It was also so jarring listening to the bright upbeat song whilst all that was going. If I were to rank the scariest or most sinister MVs of Red Velvet this one is number one. They mastered the blend of bright innocence and dark cunning.
I do hope this is not the end of Red Velvet. If a group is to disband they should go out with a bang! The way Starship handled the end of Sistar was honestly the best and it was so amicable.
I’m not saying Red Velvet will disband but if they were to, they deserve the biggest, brightest and best send off.
However, judging by the way they talk they don’t want to end yet. So, I hope SM gets their shit together. I would say they should leave and start again but it’s hard to leave SM.
*gasp*
