I didn’t talk about music much on here during 2024 but I was still checking out my favs. I also checked out some new groups or artists, wait… not new, new to me. I dipped my toe in oceans other than my own and it was fun!
Doechii
She is popping off right now. If she does not win a Grammy then the whole thing is rigged. Honestly, I heard about her back when the song “Hi my name’s Doechii with two I’s” was popping off on Tik Tok. Then, she kept popping up and I just loved her flow.
The song that really made me a fan was Spookie Coochie. She raps so fast and it does things to my brain! I love her creativity and the way she plays with music.
Then her latest album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, is amazing. I love how each song flows into the next. I love how the whole album tells a story. I love how personal it is and how honest it is no matter how it makes her look. She truly is a very human artist/celebrity.
She also has such old hip hop vibes and that is right up my alley. I’ve missed that kind of rap.
And her Tiny Desk concert!!! Yeah she killed that.
GloRilla
I love her.
I could honestly end it there but no let me say why.
I love her voice, I love how it sounds and how deep it is and impactful it is. I also love her accent! Why have y’all (Americans) been keeping the Memphis accent from me?! I love accents and no one showed me this one. It is gorgeous, I love listening to her speak as much as I love listening to her rap.
I love that she has given us girlies anthem after anthem. From TGIF to WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME. She knows what we need when it’s time to turn up.
I was actually going to review her album but I never got round to it. I loved it. There are gems on there that aren’t talked about as much like Stop Playing and Don’t Deserve ft Muni Long. Honestly, she is a girls girl and you can see that in her music.
Purple Kiss
I actually got into them towards the end of the year. I am mad I didn’t check them out sooner. They’re so good!
I did say I am not getting into any new kpop groups and I stand by that but sometimes some slip on through the cracks. Although, these days I don’t tend to stan but just like listen to the music. So that’s me with Purple Kiss. I’ve been enjoying their music but I know nothing about them as people.
They have such good voices, singing, and I heard they even have choreographed for some of their songs. They have also self-produced songs. We need to hype up women as much as we do men in kpop that self-produce.
So far my favourite songs are On my Bike, Zombie, Sweet Juice and Nerdy.
If you like Dreamcatcher, you’ll most likely like Purple Kiss too.
XG
I mean, do I need to say more? They blew up last year. They had a lot of hit songs, one of which made it onto my Spotify wrapped (as shit as wrapped was). The one was Something Ain’t Right.
I love their style, I love their music and I love their music videos. I am loving it here.
Kiss of Life
I have been loving their songs and really it is no surprise. I am lover of R n B and they deliver on that front.
I did manage to talk about them on here. Again, they’re a group where I only listen to their music. However, having said that, I do have a soft spot for Natty.
I love that they have had hit songs and they’re blowing up. Natty was trainee for way too long (they shouldn’t put kids through that) so I love to see her and her group win.
I hope one day a song Belle makes is used as their title track and it does really well. Like I said, let’s hype up singer songwriter women as much as we do men!
I am real sad that some of these I’m talking about came to the UK and I couldn’t go to see them!!! Why?! Doechii!! I can’t believe I missed her. XG I’m sorry I was saving for Ateez. Hopefully, I’ll get to see Kiss of Life.
I just realised this list has been all women… as it should!
I wonder if Kiss of Life is named after that Sade song.

they say it’s because they want to be a refreshing kiss of life to kpop but you know what… maybe their ceo is a fan of the song! i can see it

Okay. I was only curious since it was the first thing to come to mind. Maybe the CEO is a Sade fan? You never know!
