I got to see this recently with a friend and it was so much fun. You may be thinking “whaat!” as the subject matter was quite heavy but we were just happy to be watching Star Wars. The nostalgia hit us hard. Seeing Tarkin, Darth Vader, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Admiral Ackbar made me so happy. I sat there like “It’s you!” the whole movie.

Also that scene at the end when Vader shows up and they’re like “Oh crap!” … wow he still has it. That is what you call menacing. (Take notes Kylo Ren! … actually don’t take notes… no stop!).

As for the story, it was good. I kind of knew the ending was going to be the way it was. I remembered A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and how the rebels always die for the cause. Yeah it wasn’t a surprise, it didn’t stop me crying over Chirrut Imwe though, he was my favourite character and Malbus… *sigh* they were so awesome.

I also liked how they explained the fault in the Death Star. I wondered why Galen didn’t go out guns blazing but to be honest his plan was way better. Create a flaw in the weapon and tell the empire’s enemies and destroy said weapon, genius. He turned that lemon into lemonade.

The only complaint that I can have is that because it was so action packed we didn’t really get to know the characters, mainly Jyn. I feel like there’s so much more to her story and yet we only saw a snippet. I could have connected with her more if there was more to her than being Galen’s daughter.

Also I will say this till something happens, why do the jedi always lose?! I know they’re not in this movie but dang! Seeing as we’re doing spin offs can we have one with jedi actually fighting back? Or in the new movies can there be badass jedi outside of the Skywalker family? Can there? (Of course there’s Yoda and Obi Wan but come on there must be more!)

And finally the best part of the movie… representation!!! I had hearts in my eyes. The main cast was made up of Asians, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna who is Latino and Forest Whitaker who’s black. For this reason it goes up there as one of my favourite Star Wars movies ever!

Anyway I liked this spin off, I hope they do more… with less crying please. But then again it is called Star Wars, there’ll always be a reason to cry.
