When you’re feeling Ecclesiastics too much

When I read Ecclesiastics when I was younger I was not expecting it to be so despairing.

It’s like Solomon just had this epiphany and is like “The world is meaningless!”

At first I didn’t get it but then I was having a deep day (I’ve been having a lot of them lately) and I was like the world is meaningless. Why do we do the things we do? We study, we work and we die. When you sit there and think about it there is no point to it all. No wonder people get depressed with the 9-5 because you realise there is no point to it at all. It’s empty and produces no meaning.

Sure you may get a reward and money but in terms of life, it has no meaning.

Before I could get super down though I realised, the world is meaningless but only when God is absent. Love, joy, hope and faith, those come from God. God is love. God brings life to everything.

When I realised that meaning came back. And that’s also how the book goes in the bible. He starts stating how everything is meaningless, and in detail, but then in the end he’s like but with God there is meaning, with God there is hope, with God our existence, this world is not meaningless.

  1. Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books of the Bible for exactly that reason. I have struggled with depression and I appreciate that Solomon begins in that dark state, but then finishes with hope. While that journey from darkness to light isn’t easy, I’m thankful to be able to look back through that book when I begin to feel weighed down again. Thank you for sharing!!

    1. Yay, I’m glad it’s one of your favourites too. It’s a great book and we all get there but not all talk about it, so it’s nice someone in the bible did 😀 You’re welcome
