They say there is nothing new under the sun. When I think of storytelling I think of Homer, the supposed first story teller, at least in writing. Although that is contested… I won’t get into it.

*ahem* Yes, according to the Western world Homer is the father of fiction writing. Since him there have been many, many stories. The author world is very heavily saturated, it’s like trying to stand out as a water droplet in the ocean.

It’s not just fiction that is saturated but music too and art, film, TV and plays are too. Although, I feel like art has more wiggle room.

So one fear of mine is running out of ideas. With the amount of authors that exist it is a wonder that new stories are still being created. The same with songs, I wonder at how new songs can be created that sound new and different.

We are against plagiarism in our society so all the new stories and songs have to be original and new and if they draw inspiration from other works or sample it has to be clearly stated and the original writer/artist given credit and/or money.

So I wonder if one day I’ll just run out ideas. If I’ll have no more stories to tell. If my brain will just run dry and be an empty husk. I even worry about this corner on my blog. What if I run out things to muse about? Which is why I was scared to be a feature journalist. What if I ran out of ideas for my column?

And music, I worry that one day people will just run out of ideas for music. There’ll be no new songs, everything to be sampled will have already have been sampled. What then?

The film and TV world is another thing. It feels like they have already ran out of ideas but truly I don’t think they have. I think because they are unwilling to be diverse and adapt different kinds of stories they’re becoming very generic and mediocre. But I won’t get into that.

Anyway, I don’t have the answer to my question. I don’t know if we will run out ideas. I don’t know what will happen if we do. It’s just something I worry about and I bet there are others who worry about it too.

I wonder if anyone does have an answer to the question or if it’s one of those we won’t know till it happens.
