So I’m going to be watching more movies from Asia. I’ve been doing Old School Reviews for a while and I feel it’s time to move on. So if you know of any cool movies I should check out then let me know.
The first I shall be talking about is Monster Hunt, a Chinese film released in 2015 and directed by Raman Hui. The film did very well in China becoming it’s highest grossing film and it topped box office charts. It’s the first Chinese film to do so in twenty one years.
As for the movie how was it?
It was okay.
Minor Spoilers Ahead
It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t amazing. The graphics were cool and the monsters were lovable. I actually started to sympathise with them and was drawn in to the narrative. They were cute and sinister at the same time and it was an interesting world that Hui created.
The human characters were cute but familiar. I felt like I had met them before in other films and so it did feel a bit like deja vu. However I liked them and the dynamic that they had.
I feel like there are still questions to be answered, like about the grandma and the father and other things. I also want to know what becomes of the Monster King. That was so sad. When he had to let him go but I feel that is not the end.
I kind of was expecting more action than what we got. I mean we did get action scenes but they felt lacking, I feel like they could have been so much more. There was a missing element for me.
It was silly though, so silly! And I liked it. It’s a good movie to see with friends and the family (although maybe not with too small kids) as it’s fun, relaxing and silly. You don’t have to take it too seriously and the lessons learnt are easily digestible.
All in all it was okay, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.
I wonder if the sequel will be a step up. The sequel is set to be released in 2018 so first watch Monster Hunt and see what you think and then we can watch the sequel and see if it’s better than the first.
That is all,
ciao!
