Relatable Gem: Dolly Parton – 9 to 5

I’m so confused, apparently I’ve written about this song before but I can’t find the post. Where did it go? Why are the tags already there? A mystery…

Scooby Doo and crew we will investigate this another time.

Welcome! I was thinking about adulthood and life, as I do. I was then listening to Miss Dolly Parton, I had a craving for country music and I wanted to sing so I chose 9 to 5.

Before I never fully understood what was so bad about a 9 to 5 job. I thought surely it’s good to work and have an income. Oh how I didn’t know how soul sucking some 9 to 5 jobs can be. Adulthood in general sometimes feels like an endless stretch of meaningless work.

Am I getting too deep? I’m sorry I’m in that place.

However what I like about this song is that whilst it addresses that it’s actually a hopeful song. She talks about how business driven this world is and how they just “use your mind” and yet don’t give you credit or a promotion. However she also talks about the hope that one day your dreams will be fulfilled and you will escape the humdrum depressing side of the working life.

I like the positive twist. I also love the honestly of the lyrics. That’s one thing I really love about country music, it’s so honest. The artists pen songs that are real life and that just speaks to me.

Thank you for joining me, check out Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 if you haven’t already. It doesn’t just have great lyrics it’s a good song in general. It’ll get you dancing.
