I love Mulan. The movie is gold and all the songs in the movie are gold but I decided to choose only three to talk about in this post. Enjoy!
I’ll Make a Man Out of You
I don’t know anyone who dislikes this song. This used to our anthem in IT class in Secondary School. I find it funny as I went to a girls’ school and yet we loved this song so much. Literally it only took one person to sing the chorus and we’d all join in until,
Mysterious as the dark side of the moooooon!
Be honest, you sang that didn’t you?
It’s a song talking about how to be a man and has a woman completing all the tasks. Maybe that’s why we all loved it. It’s talking to men but Mulan shows a woman can do it too. However she doesn’t succeed straight away, she works hard and builds her muscle and fails a couple of times until that sweet moment when she succeeds and retrieves that arrow.
Ah, it gets to me every time! Such a great movie!
Reflection
“Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside?”
Girl I don’t know. Life is a journey and it takes a while to get on good terms with the girl in the mirror. Also have you ever had that thing were one time you look at yourself in the mirror and you look one way and the next time you look you see yourself another way. What is reality?
Let’s not get too deep.
But the journey to self discovery is long. In Mulan we go on this journey with her and I like to think she knows the girl in the mirror by the end.
Taken another way those lyrics would be great for a horror movie.
Honour to us All
This song talks of the expectations of family and society. Mulan wasn’t even about that life and this whole ordeal made her question herself (see above song) and yet she went through it to please her family.
To bring honour to her family through marriage. This is still a thing with many cultures even my own. I have cousins asking me when I’ll get married and cousins telling me marriage is the only source of happiness. It pisses me off but that may be because I’m born in this time or because I hate double standards. In fact I’m lucky I’m born in this time as I can reject such standards. However Mulan had to bare those expectations on her shoulders.
It was refreshing however that her father never expected that of her, he was a good man.
On the other hand the song is fun, I like singing it.
Those are my favourites, what are yours?
